Nothing To Lose

Bullying in movies is seen as something funny, something that the jocks do to the typical nerds to show that they are better than them. Typically the nerds/geeks that are bullied in schools in the media do not respond to proportions that would be typical in everyday life. In the movie Can't Hardly Wait the nerds just plan to take "racey" photos of the jocks. Jocks who usually beat up the nerd are glorified and the nerds in all media are usually expected to laugh about it later on which is not realistic. Reality usually ends in more awful conditions such as suicide or murder. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens between 15 to 24. The ratio of teen sucide from male to female is 7:1. The two top leaders of teenage death are unintentional injury and homicide. While a lot of the media aims toward the lighthearted haha bullying is funny, it does not deal with the real truth of bullying leading to depression, anger, murder and suicide. This is why I love the Billy Talent song from their first album "Nothing to Lose."

"Nothing To Lose"

Need more friends with wings
All the angels I know
Put concrete in my veins
I’d always walk home alone
So I became lifeless
Just like my telephone
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
Never played truth or dare
I’d have to check my mirror
To see if I’m still here
My parents had no clue
That I ate all my lunches
Alone in the bathroom
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
My notebook will explain
There’s nothing to gain
And I can’t fight the pain
Teachers said "it's just a phase"
When I grow up my children
Will probably do the same
Kids just love to tease
Who'd know it put me underground at seventeen
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
My notebook will explain
There’s nothing to gain
And I can’t fight the pain
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
But the days don’t seem to change
There’s nothing to lose
My notebook will explain
There’s nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There’s nothing to gain
And I just died today

I think that more media should be open to the fact that bullying and suicide and murder are real in this society and start paying attention to the real fact that these things are not funny... like the movies try to make them. Billy Talent's song Nothing To Lose makes the argument against the media that teenage suicide is here..........

The Bottome Line: Billy Talent rocks and the fact they are addressing teenage suicide is awsome!

another great post - I agree, that song is very powerful and I think it speaks to a lot of teens out there because several teens have told me about it. It is great to see a band delving into some serious issues.
